Clinical Consultant

Dr. Shoolin is a clinical consultant at MJP Healthcare Innovations, LLC, and a part-time Family Physician in the Advocate Medical Group. He has served as Advocate HealthCare’s Vice-President for Clinical Informatics and as Chief Medical Information Officer for the Advocate Medical Group. In these roles, he led the system’s clinical transformation of healthcare utilizing information technology to improve patient safety and clinical performance, introduced practice changes and standardization across Advocate’s 10 in-patient sites of care, and worked with a large team including clinicians and IT specialists to implement a comprehensive system of electronic medical records.

Previously, Dr. Shoolin was Medical Director of Quality and Care Management at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Medical Director for Advocate Lutheran General Health Partners.  In these positions, he began the hospitalist program at Lutheran General Hospital and engaged physicians in quality improvements in the areas of cardiovascular risk profiling and prevention and diabetic care.  During his tenure, Lutheran General was continuously named as one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States, named the #1 hospital in quality in Chicago by HCIA, and named as a U.S Top 10 as “standard-bearer in patient safety and innovation” by Consumers’ Checkbook.

Prior to assuming a role as a clinical consultant at MJP Healthcare Innovations, Dr. Shoolin worked as an independent consultant, assisting healthcare facilities upgrade their information systems, mentoring physicians as they transitioned into the position of Chief Medical Information Officers, and providing clinical expertise to guide the development and application of analytic tools to assess the performance of healthcare organizations and practitioners.

Dr. Shoolin served on the Chicagoland Metropolitan Healthcare Council’s Health Information Exchange Task Force and on the Illinois Hospital’s Association Quality Institute Task Force and Regional Health Information Organization Committee.  He is the founder of the Chicago Medical Informaticists Organization and was a select member of the Health Information and Management Systems Society’s Davies Award Selection Committee.

Dr. Shoolin is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians and is a former member of the American Medical Directors of Information Systems. He graduated from the University of Illinois-Urbana, received a D.O. degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (now Midwestern University), completed a residency in Family Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital, and received an M.B.A. from the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
